One Big Thing: AI for All
The UK government has announced that every civil servant, over 500,000 people, will receive training on the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) this autumn through the One Big Thing (OBT) programme. This is more than just a training exercise. It signals a shift towards embedding AI at the heart of public service delivery.
At Warp Technologies, we support this move. AI has the potential to supercharge decision-making, improve public services, and free up time for the human-centred work that matters most. But we also know that training alone is not enough to create real-world impact.
What is the One Big Thing Programme?
Launched in 2023, One Big Thing is an annual UK Civil Service transformation initiative aimed at upskilling government employees in key areas:
- In 2023, the focus was on data skills. Over 212,000 civil servants participated, logging more than 567,000 learning hours.
- In 2024, the theme shifted to innovation, encouraging practical small-scale improvements.
- In 2025, the spotlight is on Artificial Intelligence.
The aim is to ensure every civil servant understands the fundamentals of AI and its application in the workplace. Learn more about the official campaign on the Modern Civil Service website.
Why AI and Why Now?
Public services are under increasing pressure. Citizens expect faster, smarter, and more personalised services. Budgets are tight, and the demand for efficiency is relentless. AI offers solutions:
- Automating routine administrative tasks
- Supporting evidence-based decision-making
- Personalising citizen interactions
- Enhancing fraud detection and risk management
The Cabinet Office recognises that AI can help create a more responsive, efficient, and future-ready public sector.
The Missing Piece: From Training to Transformation
While the AI training provided by the One Big Thing initiative is a crucial step, it will only create lasting impact if civil servants also have:
The Right Tools and Use Cases
Training must be complemented by fit-for-purpose technology. At Warp, we help public sector teams deploy Microsoft Power Platform solutions that simplify complex processes and enhance service delivery.
Strong Data and Ethical Governance
AI is only as effective as the data behind it. Without clear data quality standards, governance, and ethical frameworks, the risks of misuse or bias increase. Warp assists organisations in building responsible AI governance models that meet public sector standards.
Specialist Support for Real-World Impact
AI adoption is not a one-off event. It requires ongoing support, iterative development, and cross-functional collaboration. Our Data and AI consulting services help public bodies move from experimentation to delivery.
AI for Public Good
The UK government’s commitment to AI through the One Big Thing programme is an important step. But delivering real transformation requires more than awareness. It takes action, investment, and partnership.
At Warp, we work alongside public sector organisations to ensure AI is not just a theoretical concept but a practical tool for improving lives and services.
